What Our Test Caption Got Right, and What It Missed

Topic: a short video about the 1518 dancing plague in Strasbourg, keywords history and mystery. The generator returned 198 characters: an opening line about unraveling the mystery, the question “What caused this bizarre historical event?”, three hashtags (#historymystery, #strangebuttrue, #dancehistory), a few emojis and a closing invitation to share theories in the comments.

Right: it is short, it names the event in plain words that someone might type into TikTok search, and the theory prompt gives commenters something to argue about. TikTok has said captions, sounds and hashtags are among the video details its For You recommendations take into account, so plain keywords are not wasted.

Missed: the model has no live view of TikTok, so its hashtags are guesses. Search each one in the app before you post and keep the ones with real videos behind them. And the caption restated the hook instead of adding to it; a detail such as “it lasted two months” would have given viewers a reason to read past the first line. Writing a TikTok caption for search

Many people use TikTok to look things up. These six habits make a caption easier to find without making it read like a keyword list.

  1. Lead with the phrase people would search

    Name the topic in ordinary words in the first line, such as "the 1518 dancing plague", not a clever pun that nobody types.

  2. Repeat that phrase on screen

    Use the same words in your on-screen text or opening line, so caption, picture and audio all describe the same thing.

  3. Tag the topic and the format

    A topic tag plus a format tag, such as #historymystery and #storytime, tells TikTok more than five generic ones.

  4. End on a question people can answer

    Theories, guesses and either-or choices fill comment sections. A question that needs expertise to answer gets silence.

  5. Add, do not repeat

    If the hook already says it, the caption should add a fact, a date or a stake that makes the video worth finishing.

  6. Read it on a phone first

    The caption sits over the bottom of the video. Check that the first line is readable there and does not cover anything important.
